SCHLATT was born 1964 in Lauda, Germany and started the practice of karate-dô in 1979. He trained and taught in various dôjôs in Germany and his karate-dô took him to many countries abroad, including Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bermuda, Canada, Finland, France, Great Britain, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Malta, Russia, South Africa, Spain, Sri Lanka, Switzerland and the United States. He trained for approximately two years in Japan at Taisho and Komazawa universities, at the Honbu Dôjô (Central Dôjô of the JKA) in Tôkyô, as well as in Northern Japan under the guidance of grandmasters SATO YUJI and TAKAHASHI ANKI. In 2009 he received his 5th dan from OCHI HIDEO, Chief Instructor of the JKA of Germany and Europe.

SCHLATT began his studies of Japanese and Chinese culture and language in 1985 at the University of Freiburg in Germany, and graduated from the University of Tübingen with a master’s degree in economics. With the death of his sensei FUJINAGA YASUYUKI, SCHLATT’s dream of becoming his assistant instructor in Vienna could never be realized. Instead, he went to Canada for two years to teach and train. During this period he also qualified for the Canadian National Team at the JKA World Championship in Osaka, Japan.

Since 1990, SCHLATT has been interpreting for visiting Japanese instructors at several European karate camps. Today, he works as an independent author and specializes in translating international books about karate into German, English and French.
