The Karate Dictionary
Third Edition
Indispensable for your martial arts library! Here is a complete compendium of essential terms for the practice of karate-dô, with special focus on the Shôtôkan style. Japanese characters (kanji), rendered in exquisite, handmade calligraphy, uniquely compliment the terminology used throughout this book. A pronunciation guide for the Japanese terms is also included, as well as the English translation for each term.
This comprehensive reference book covers the numerical system, different target levels and directions of movement, the basic elements of karate training, basic and advanced katas, as well as the Japanese terms for typical instructions and commands you will hear throughout your karate training. Many photographs are included to further illustrate karate stances, postures, and techniques.
Finally, no reference book would be complete without exploring the philosophical background of karate through an explanation of selected terms, the origin of the name karate-dô, and listing the Twenty Precepts of FUNAKOSHI and the rules that govern the dôjô. Final chapters touch on karate philosophies and include some annotations of famous Zen-masters.

Dear Schlatt-sensei (!),
Thank you very much for your prompt response to my request. Let start by saying that your dictionary is absolutely the best book I have seen on this subject. I lived in Japan for many years and really appreciate the time and effort you took to explain Karate in a concise and accurate manner.
Again, thank you for your time on my behalf.
Arigato gozaimasu,

Just for your information too, I have been practicing Shotokan for 32 years and you have the best material I have ever seen in one book (the Shotokan Dictionary).
Here in Australia we don't get much, (I don't know about Europe) but it was the best reference I have ever seen. Thank you for all your hard work in putting that particular book together.
Kind regards,
Con Sklavounos
Thank you Mr. Schlatt. Also, I wanted to tell you that I really like your Shotokan Dictionary. I think it's a fine piece of work and I use it as a reference quite often. Take care and keep up the excellent work you're doing with the publications. I would love to see more of you're publications in English.
Carlos
